Google announced that Beijing had renewed its operating licence, which surprise many in the industry who had not expected the Chinese government to compromise in its censorship dispute with the US internet group.
The development came after a standoff of 6 month provoked by Google, which stirred a hardline response by declaring that it would end its four-year-old agreement requireing it to censor Chinese searches.
This news was much welcomed by China experts in the US, calling it as a face-saving compromise. However, the industry observers still warned that China might now put progressive limit on the access to Google’s services.
