Many small businesses looking for ways to improve revenue and customer base have turned to merchant accounts. So what is a merchant account you ask? A merchant account allows a business to accept credit card and debit card payments from customers. Independent service organizations or ISO’s provide small businesses with merchant accounts via the internet. ISO’s also provide additional services such as eChecks and escrow services.
Credit card usage is extremely high in the U.S. and it’s easy to see why. Just looking at the many benefits they offer- security, convenience, easy of use, etc, it’s no wonder why so many of today’s shoppers prefer to use credit cards when paying for purchases made online and in-person. Obtaining a credit card processing service for your business can be an advantage in a number of ways.
First, is the increased convenience that you can offer to your current and future customers. Our economy has progressively moved away from paper currency, and most of today’s shoppers predominantly use credit cards when buying items. If you have an online store, credit card processing also allows your business to conduct sales around the clock, therefore freeing your operation of the business hours confines of a physical store. This is important if your business has an international following or domestic customers that live in different time zones.
Getting set up with a merchant account is easy: First, determine what type of merchant account would be a good fit for your business and apply to providers accordingly. Some important things to consider are a provider’s price, services offered, and the types of products and/or services that your business sells. Once you are approved, an ISO will open up a merchant account for your business at a partnering financial institution. Any credit/debit card payments made on behalf of your customers are transferred over to your business’s merchant account. Lastly, the funds are withdrawn from the merchant account and deposited into your checking account.
