Research In Motion’s recently appointed chief executive–Thorsten Heins, has showed off a prototype of the next generation BlackBerry 10 smartphone, which will be the key to the turnround of the troubled company.
The new handset is built with a 4.2-inch touchscreen and powered by a new operating system that forms a key part of RIM’s strategy as it struggles to compete with Apple’s popular iPhone and smartphones based on Google’s Android operating system, such as those made by Samsung.
The look of the prototype device is like a shrunken version of RIM’s PlayBook PC tablet, which is larger than the iPhone while smaller than some of Samsung’s popular Galaxy family of smartphones. It comes with a black case and no physical buttons on the front. The most notable feature of the new prototype is the lack of a physical keyboard. Instead, like most other touch phones, the mobile device features a virtual touchscreen keyboard.
