In May, China’s trade surplus was actually smaller than originally expected, adding to evidence that the nation is slowly cutting its reliance on exports, in a development that is taken as a necessary move for rebalancing the global economy.
It is reported that China has obtained a surplus of $13.05bn in May, which is larger than its $11.4bn surplus in April, but still well below market forecasts of $18-20bn.
The surprisingly narrow surplus was largely due to the strength in import. Imports rose by 28.4% in May from a year earlier, up from a 21.8% in April. Exports slowed to 19.4% year-on-year growth, and down from a 29.9% increase in April.
