Ministers say that clapping down on illegal file-sharing is crucial to stop UK’s creative industries haemorrhaging hundreds of millions of pounds.
However, under the new law rushed through parliament along with other measures such as making mephedrone illegal, innocent people could be banned from going on the internet without trial. They could be caught out by the Digital Economy Bill, which became law after peers approved final changes to the legislation.
Now, if a copyright holder, like a record company, believes that someone is downloading music, films or games illegally, they can approach the person’s internet service provider. If the infringement continues, thire internet connection could be blocked. Meanwhile, websites repeatedly found flouting copyright law can also be blocked by the government.
Critics said the bill is dangerous andundemocratic. They are concerned about that the owners of internet cafes, students in shared acomodation and parents may be punished for the alleged abuse of others.
